About the Boutique
The von Neumann Boutique is a fictional framework that demonstrates abstract concepts in computer science (CS) to introduce audiences with little or no CS knowledge to fundamental topics. We start with a story about a smart clothing retail store, manned entirely by robots and intelligent systems.
Meet the Robots

Violet: Purifier
Keeps surfaces and materials within the boutique sanitized. Purifies air. Offers guests hygenic choices.
The Furies: Security cameras
In-store security system. Named after three historical figures who monitored Ada Lovelace's movements in her youth.
Turner: Inventory control specialist
Keeps track of inventory. Stocks items.
Mrs. Somerville: In-store customer service representative
Handles customer concerns in-person. Prepares purchases before they leave the boutique.
Chip: Online/phone customer service representative
Monitors and responds to online feedback. Answers calls.
Louis: Sales associate
Acts as Maìtre d'. Greets customers at door and determines their next course of action. Assists customers through their shopping experience as needs arise.
Robert: Store clock & manager
Regulates cycles for all robots in the boutique
ADA: Appearance & Dressing Advisor
Smart mirror prototype. Uses AI to create character sketches of customers. Recommends styles and brands. Puts together outfits with store inventory.
Faia: Retired fashion wardrobe
Outdated model replaced by ADA. Offered customers fashion advice using combinations recommended by designers.
Mr. Babbage: Cash register
Performs calculations and handles all payments.
William & Henry (The Gates): Entry doors & security
Monitor pedestrians outside the boutique. Determine whether or not to admit customers inside.
Coco: Display & Design Manager
Arranges inventory artfully. Determines store arrangement to maximize customer experience.
DeliverBot: Delivery robot
Delivers purchases to customers' homes within the smart city.
